On Sunday, October 16, members of the IACC’s Young Executives Committee will participate in the 2011 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, which will take place at Clove Lakes Park in Staten Island, NY. This is the second consecutive year committee members have been a part of the walk; last year’s team raised $1,000 for the American Cancer Society. The Making Strides walk raises money to fund groundbreaking research and help people in need receive life-saving screenings and services. The Italy – America Chamber of Commerce (IACC) in cooperation with the Italian Ministry of Agriculture is launching a campaign in the New York metropolitan area to raise awareness amongst consumers about the benefits of authentic Italian food products.   These are unique products that can be produced only in certain areas of Italy by a restricted number of companies following a series of strict rules dictated by local consortia (Consorzi di Tutela).

Some of these products, such as: Parmigiano Reggiano, Grana Padano, Prosciutto di Parma, just to mention few, are very popular in the USA and have already been targeted by local and foreign competitors by introducing products with similar names and lower prices into the market, that in many cases, have confused consumers who are not always able to distinguish the authentic ones from the imitations.

The aim of the campaign therefore is to increase the general knowledge of consumers located in the New York metro area about Italian authentic products helping them to better understand those products, theirs characteristics, their methods of production, their history, giving them, in the mean time, the tools to be able to recognize the real ones from the imitations.

In order to raise consumer awareness, the IACC is organizing 200 in-store product demonstrations in the New York metropolitan area in cooperation with the most important specialty food retailers and specialty food importers from November 29, 2010 to January 15, 2011.

Each demo will feature a minimum of two Italian authentic products chosen amongst those already available in stores and consumers will be able to taste the products and will receive informational material about the showcased products.
